Rev. Miriam Mendez
Rev. Miriam Méndez has been called to join the regional ministry team of the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey as a full-time Associate Regional Pastor as of September 1, 2015.
A native New Yorker and Puerto Rican, the Rev. Méndez is a leader, preacher, teacher, administrator, church planter and an advocate for justice. Her rich and long history with the American Baptist Churches has taught her to value, respect, and welcome the theological diversity within the ABC family. Her experiences working with multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and multi-racial communities have prepared her to serve and lead in a manner that facilitates spaces of grace where encouragement, accountability, honesty, trust, and support, is given and received for the glory of God and the blessing of one another.
Rev. Méndez has served in pastoral ministry for over 15 years in both English and Spanish speaking congregations. She has founded two churches – a team-based, multi-denominational church in southwest Portland, Oregon and the first ABC bilingual/multicultural church in southeast Portland, Oregon. Most recently she served as the Associate Executive Minister of the ABC of the Central Pacific Coast. She is committed to assisting pastors, leaders and congregations build a Christ-centered community devoted to serve locally, regionally and globally.
For 15 years, Rev. Méndez served as adjunct faculty at George Fox Evangelical Seminary teaching in the areas of spiritual leadership, reconciliation, prayer, and coaching. Rev. Méndez is a certified Spiritual Director with over fifteen years of experience.
Rev. Méndez serves on the Board of Directors of the American Baptist Home Mission Societies and on the American Baptist Women in Ministry Advisory Team. She is also currently working on her Doctor of Ministry on Leadership and Global Perspectives at George Fox Evangelical Seminary. Yet, what thrills Miriam’s heart is being the mother of two beautiful and courageous young adults, the daughter of compassionate and unshakable parents and the sister of two wonderful and steadfast sisters!
As Rev. Méndez begins her work with ABCNJ she looks forward to working with and supporting pastors, leaders and congregations so that together we may fulfill the ministry mission and live out the mandate of the Gospel.
